Loneliness is something that can affect anyone, regardless of age, background or circumstance. During Loneliness Awareness Week, we’re encouraging people across Rotherham to recognise the importance of meaningful connections and to know that support is available.

At Rotherham United Community Trust, we see every day how coming together through shared activities can help people build friendships, improve confidence and feel more connected to their community.

Research shows that loneliness can have a significant impact on both our mental and physical wellbeing. Whether it’s caused by retirement, bereavement, caring responsibilities, changes in health, or simply feeling disconnected from others, loneliness is a common experience that many people face at some point in their lives.

The good news is that small steps can make a big difference.

Our Health & Wellbeing programme offers a wide range of opportunities for people to meet others, stay active and access support in a welcoming and friendly environment. From walking groups and coffee mornings to fitness classes, badminton, table tennis and walking football, there are plenty of ways to get involved and connect with others.

We also provide specialist support sessions for people living with dementia, carers, those experiencing mental health challenges, and individuals recovering from alcohol or substance misuse. These sessions create safe spaces where people can share experiences, access support and build lasting friendships.

For many participants, attending a session is about much more than physical activity. It’s about having somewhere to go, seeing familiar faces, sharing conversations and feeling part of a community.

Loneliness Awareness Week reminds us that connection matters. Whether you’re looking to improve your wellbeing, meet new people, or support a friend or family member who may be feeling isolated, there is a place for you within our Health & Wellbeing programme.
