Barbara’s Journey to Healthier Eating with RUCT
When Barbara joined Rotherham United Community Trust’s Themed Cooking Class in February 2026, she was looking for an opportunity to learn more about healthy eating and cooking in a friendly and supportive environment.
Barbara, 81, was particularly interested in understanding how to prepare healthier meals and make better use of ingredients such as herbs and spices in her cooking.
I wanted to learn more about healthy eating and cooking, including the use of herbs.
Since attending the sessions, Barbara learned about nutrition and different healthy food choices. Through practical activities and discussions, she has learned more about food types and how certain foods can contribute to a healthier lifestyle.
One of the key things Barbara has taken away from the programme is a better understanding of herbs and spices and how they can be used to enhance any meal.
I’ve learnt what so many new herbs and spices, and how to use them in my homecooked meals!
Beyond the cooking itself, Barbara has also enjoyed the social aspect of the sessions. Meeting new people, sharing experiences, and learning alongside other participants has helped make the classes an enjoyable part of her routine.
Reflecting on her time with the programme, Barbara praised both the welcoming atmosphere and the support provided by the instructor.
I really enjoy the classes and I have made some new friends through attending. The coach, Sally, is really nice and gives good advice and tips.
Barbara’s experience highlights the wider benefits of RUCT’s Themed Cooking Classes, which not only help participants develop practical cooking skills and knowledge around healthy eating but also provide opportunities to socialise, build confidence, and improve wellbeing.
The sessions continue to support local people of all ages to make positive lifestyle choices while connecting with others in their community.
