Here at Rotherham United Community Trust (RUFC), we’re proud to deliver a wide range of badminton sessions across Rotherham, offering free and open-access opportunities for everyone to get involved. No matter your age, background or ability level. These sessions are all about creating a fun, welcoming environment where people can enjoy being active and build connections within their community. Whether you’re picking up a racket for the first time or returning to the sport after years away. Recently. we caught up with some of the participants who regularly attend to hear more about their experiences. Here is what they had to say:
Anne
When asked to tell us about her experience at the badminton sessions, Anne shared how much they’ve positively impacted her life – both on and off the court.
“It’s been a benefit both health and social wise,” Anne explained. “I’ve met some lovely people and made some great friends through attending. My knowledge has also grown thanks to the mix of religions and faiths represented at the sessions.”
Anne takes part in both the ladies-only and mixed badminton sessions and spoke highly of Naz, who leads the group.
“Naz is very friendly and encouraging to everyone who attends,” she said. “She’s supported me through some personal issues in my life and has become a good friend.”
Ray Haywood
Ray, aged 68, first came along to the badminton sessions after being recommended the Healthwave programme by a dietician nurse. He says the sessions have become a highlight of his week.
“I enjoy the badminton sessions particularly because it’s good fun, it’s well organised, and they make sure the Healthwave people always get rotated and get opportunities to play,” Ray said. “The skill levels vary incredibly, so it’s open to anybody really who just wants to come and have a nice social hour of badminton.”
Ramzan
At 55, Ramzan says the badminton sessions have made a big difference to his health, fitness, and social life.
“I enjoy these sessions, they’re excellent!” he told us. “It’s one way of getting fit and getting out and socialising with people, and we all tend to get along really well. I’m thankful to the organisers as well as Naz for arranging these. If it wasn’t for these sessions, I’d probably do nothing and deteriorate with my health. I think it’s a Godsend!”
