As part of the EFL Week of Action, Rotherham United Community Trust is shining a light on the incredible journeys of participants who have developed through our programmes, showcasing the real pathways and opportunities created through our work.
One of those success stories is Bailey Finney, who began his journey with RUCT as a young participant at our football camps and has recently been offered a full time role as part of our delivery team, inspiring the next generation.
“I first got involved at Rotherham United Community Trust when I was a young child, attending the Wickersley football camps,” Bailey explained. “That experience got me interested in becoming a football coach. I realised I enjoyed helping others more than actually playing, which pushed me to choose subjects like Sports Science and Sports Studies at school.”
Bailey’s passion for coaching led him to study at Rotherham United Sports College, where he was able to combine his love for sport with the chance to learn from professionals working in the industry.
“I chose to study at Rotherham United Sports College as it was the best fit for my needs. It allowed me to learn about coaching and other interesting aspects of sport while also improving my skills as a footballer, which helped me become a better coach.”
During his time as a student, Bailey volunteered across various RUCT sessions, supporting staff and gaining hands-on experience that would become the foundation of his future career.
“Volunteering with RUCT was extremely helpful, especially during school sessions where I supported leading members of staff. It helped me understand what works well in sessions and gave me ideas to use in my own delivery now that I’m regularly working in schools.”
Bailey’s commitment and enthusiasm were quickly recognised by RUCT staff, leading to casual employment and eventually a permanent 30-hour contract.
“It has been great to secure a full-time role with Rotherham United Community Trust. It’s helping me push myself further and develop as a person, teacher and coach.”
Throughout his journey, Bailey has received encouragement and mentorship from several staff members who helped him grow and progress.
“Owen Kelly was a standout support for me. He noticed my potential and helped me move from volunteering to a casual contract after seeing my work with the Boys ETC. That then led to more opportunities with projects like Girls ETC, Girls Development, Future Stars, Mini Millers and PE delivery in schools. I also learned a lot from other full-time staff such as Cole Wright, Ethan Pacey and Drew Russel, whether that was taking advice or observing how they structure and lead their sessions.”
Now an established member of the RUCT team, Bailey continues to inspire students following a similar path, encouraging them to make the most of every opportunity.
“My advice to current students is to take any chance you can to show off your skills. RUCT has so many projects that allow you to gain experience and push yourself towards a career you’re passionate about, whether that’s football coaching, teaching in schools or becoming a sports tutor. There will always be opportunities to learn and develop at Rotherham United Community Trust.”
Bailey’s journey shows how Rotherham United Community Trust provides real opportunities for young people to build their careers, gain valuable experience and make a lasting impact in their community.
