When Mason Smith first joined an after-school football club delivered by Rotherham United Community Trust, he simply wanted to play the game he loved, spend time with friends and improve his skills. What began as a fun weekly session quickly developed into a pathway of opportunity, one that has now seen him progress all the way to joining the Rotherham United Academy.
Mason’s journey started in one of RUCT’s after-school clubs, where coaches quickly recognised his natural ability, enthusiasm and attitude towards learning. Encouraged by his commitment, RUCT staff invited Mason to take part in additional training opportunities through the Trust’s development programmes, offering him a structured environment to grow both on and off the pitch.
As his confidence and technical ability continued to improve, Mason impressed coaches with his willingness to learn, his teamwork, and his desire to go the extra mile. Supported by RUCT’s links with the Rotherham United Academy, he was given the chance to take part in a trial, and his hard work paid off when he was offered a place.
Mason now trains regularly within the Academy setup, gaining access to high-quality coaching and competitive football. Along the way, he’s developed more than just his football skills: he’s learned about resilience, time management and the importance of a positive attitude. His story demonstrates how RUCT’s community sessions offer more than physical activity, they create real opportunities for young people to succeed, both on the pitch and beyond.
Mason’s success highlights the power of community sport to inspire ambition and open doors for local young people. Through RUCT’s after-school clubs, Future Stars programme and Emerging Talent Centres, hundreds of boys and girls each year are supported to learn, develop and follow their dreams.
