Yesterday at Rotherham United Football Club we celebrated the 160th Birthday of Arthur Wharton, the pioneering Ghanian-born athlete who became the worlds first Black professional footballer when he signed at Rotherham Town.

Born in Jamestown, Accra, Arthur Wharton’s story is one of courage, excellence and resilience. His ground-breaking journey in late 19th century England broke through racial barriers and paved the way for future generations of Black athletes to excel in football and sports today.

His story began as a missionary in Darlington, before his dream came true and he made history standing between the goal posts for Rotherham Town in 1889, before returning to us in 1895. During his career he played for teams such as Sheffield United, Preston North End and Stockport County.

As we mark the significant milestone, we are reminded that Arthur’s story is not just about sports but is about representation, perseverance and the power of dreams. His story continues to inspire young people, athletes and communities across the world today, reminding them that they can all achieve greatness and their dreams.

At Rotherham United Football Club and Rotherham United Community Trust we have worked alongside The Arthur Wharton Foundation both in England and in Ghana to keep Arthur’s story alive and how it to this day still offers opportunity to the young people of Rotherham.

Through this connection over 25 young people from Rotherham have had the opportunity to visit Accra, Ghana. Where the volunteered within a local school, local orphanage and coached football in the very community Arthur grew up. Sharing the love for football and the love for our badge Rotherham have.

We at the club and community trust remain dedicated to preserving Arthur’s legacy trough education, community and sports.

Happy 160th Birthday Arthur Wharton.
