At Rotherham United Community Trust, our Health & Wellbeing Walking Group has become a highlight in the calendar for many – and for Andrew Wilson, it’s made a lasting impact.

The fortnightly walking group brings people together to explore some of the most scenic routes in and around Rotherham and Sheffield. Starting from the AESSEAL New York Stadium, participants are provided with free transport to a variety of walking locations, with routes offering everything from tranquil park strolls to more rural rambles – often including a well-earned stop at a local café for a cuppa and a chat.

Andrew is a regular face at the sessions and says the group has become an important part of his routine.

“It gives me something to focus on,” he shares. “It’s something I really look forward to.”

For Andrew, the group isn’t just about exercise – although he’s quick to point out the physical benefits of staying active through regular walking. It’s also the mental and social aspects that have made a real difference.

“You feel the benefit in your body, but also in your mind,” he says. “And I’ve made some great friends through the group – people I now see at other sessions too.”

The walking group encourages casual conversation as well as movement, helping to support positive mental health. By creating a relaxed and welcoming environment, participants can open up, share experiences, and connect with others in a meaningful way.

Andrew particularly enjoys the variety of routes and the chance to discover new places – and of course, the opportunity to stop for a cup of tea along the way.

“The different walks keep things interesting, and you can’t beat a café stop for a good chat.”

We’re proud to offer a walking group that not only supports physical activity but helps build friendships, improve mental wellbeing, and bring people together from across the community. For Andrew, it’s been a positive, uplifting experience – and one he recommends to others who might be looking for connection, motivation, or simply a breath of fresh air.

Our sessions take place every two weeks and are open to adults of all abilities. Transport is free, the atmosphere is friendly, and you’ll be guaranteed some great views, good company, and – most likely – a great brew. To find out more, email health@rotherhamunited.net.
