Rotherham United Community Trust has been proud to deliver dedicated sessions for individuals living with Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) – a potentially life-threatening condition that often goes undetected without screening.

These sessions have not only provided structured fitness and wellbeing support, but also created a safe, social space where participants can learn to manage their condition while staying physically and mentally active.

Tony Williams, one of the original participants, received a letter inviting him to take part when the programme first launched. Having always maintained a good level of fitness, Tony quickly saw the value of the sessions, both physically and emotionally.

“I’ve learnt the seriousness of my condition and know not to push myself too far. These sessions have kept me going,” Tony shared. “I love the way it’s broken down – coffee and chat, then fitness, and we end with a game. It’s brilliant.”

RUCT Health Coach Jessie added,

“Tony is always keen, upbeat, and ready to help others. Despite his condition, he’s a real motivator for the group.”

Paul Churchill came into the programme after receiving a routine AAA scan at age 65.

“Since the start, I’ve learnt so much – especially how crucial exercise is when living with this condition. The sessions are so well planned, and the staff are kind and understanding of what we’re going through.”

Tony Brown, another long-standing attendee, also participates in the Trust’s golf sessions through the Peter Cowen Golf Academy.

“By attending both sessions, it’s helped my mental health massively. It’s great to have a laugh with others and get in some important exercise. I’ve learnt how to use a golf driver properly and picked up lots of new fitness exercises. I’d love to see more people join – these sessions are vital.”

Jessie agrees, saying,

“Tony B is always ready to get involved in anything that’s thrown at him. He brings great energy to both sessions.”

David Kelly, like the others, received an invite through the AAA screening service and has been a committed attendee ever since.

“I’ve really benefited from the mix of fitness and wellbeing. I want to stay involved and do what I can to help promote this so more people come along – it really does make a difference.”

Why It Matters

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms can be fatal if not detected early. The NHS offers screening to men over 65, but raising awareness and offering appropriate physical activity support is vital for managing the condition and improving quality of life.

The sessions provided by Rotherham United Community Trust demonstrate how structured community support can transform lives—not only by improving fitness and wellbeing, but by reducing isolation, building friendships, and helping participants take control of their health.

As Tony Williams puts it:

“It’s a great session. More people need to hear about it.”
