Rotherham United Community Trust (RUCT) is absolutely delighted to say that Val Hoyle, Rotherham United Women Football Club’s esteemed club founder and secretary, has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the King’s Birthday Honours 2025 “for services to Association Football and to the community in Rotherham”.
Val first founded Rotherham United Women’s Football Club in 1969, beginning a journey that’s spanned over 55 years. From playing and coaching to managing, leading and safeguarding, she’s done it all—and continues to do so with the same passion and pride that shaped the club’s earliest days.
Reacting to the news, Val said: “It was a total shock. I’ve often said, when I’ve been really busy, I need a medal as big as a dustbin lid!” Her humour is as well-known as her dedication—but behind the modesty is a woman whose tireless efforts have transformed opportunities for women and girls in football across South Yorkshire.
The club itself nominated Val for this prestigious honour, recognising her phenomenal contribution to grassroots football and her impact as a community leader and mentor. Her behind-the-scenes efforts—supporting young players, managing fixtures, leading welfare support, and being the voice of reason when it’s most needed—have helped shape Rotherham United Women into the club it is today.
Val’s BEM is a moment of pride not just for her family and teammates past and present, but for everyone at RUCT. It’s a national honour that recognises the value of volunteering, community spirit, and lifelong commitment to sport.
Val’s story is one of dedication, resilience, and love for the game—and it continues to inspire new generations of players, volunteers, and coaches.
From everyone at Rotherham United Community Trust, congratulations Val Hoyle BEM—we are so proud of you. Your legacy is woven into every corner of our club, and this recognition could not be more deserved.
