Rotherham United Community Trust’s United 4 Communities (U4C) team were crowned Sheffield Flourish League Division 2 champions in May, following a memorable 5-2 victory against Aston Swallownest in the season finale – played on the hallowed turf of the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The U4C squad put on a dominant display to secure the title, with goals coming from Henok Asfaw (2), Seaon Thompson, Abdul Karim Salem (affectionately known as “Saka”), and James Richardson.

This triumph adds to what has already been an impressive season for U4C. Earlier this year, the team was nominated for the prestigious Diversity Award at the EFL Awards in London, recognising their exceptional work in using football as a vehicle for inclusion, unity, and social impact.

Reflecting on the emotional and hard-earned win, Dylan Hadley, Youth & Inclusion Manager at RUCT and U4C Manager, said:

“In a time where there’s so much focus on what divides us, this club has been a shining example of what unites us. Some of our players arrived in the UK with nothing but hope and through football, they’ve found a home. Seeing the celebrations today, between players who didn’t even speak the same language at first, was incredibly special.

That final whistle, the cheers, the hugs, the happiness on everyone’s face – it was a moment they’ve all worked so hard for over the past year.

To see them celebrating side by side, after everything they’ve given this season, was a reminder of just how much it means. They’ve earned this – not just through their footballing ability, but through their commitment, and their willingness to support each other every single step of the way.”

Dylan also extended his gratitude to the organisers of the league and to all involved:

“A huge thank you to the Sheffield Flourish League – especially Lisa and Paul – for running such a meaningful and impactful league.

And to every team, player and manager we faced this season – you have challenged us, pushed us to our limits and brought out the best in us. We’ve had some brilliant battles and plenty of laughs along the way.

Finally, thank you to every member of the coaching team and every single player who has been a part of the journey this season – whether you came to one training session or played every minute – you’ve played a role in shaping this club and are the reason why we finished top.”

The U4C project continues to demonstrate the power of football to change lives, break down barriers and create a true sense of belonging – and this latest achievement is a testament to the strength, spirit and unity of everyone involved.
