After major surgery, David found himself facing a new and daunting reality—feeling weak and unable to manage the day-to-day tasks he had once taken for granted. But three months ago, that began to change when he joined the Cancer Rehab and Fitness sessions delivered by Rotherham United Community Trust (RUCT) at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Offered twice weekly, the sessions are specifically designed to support individuals living with or recovering from cancer and its treatment, with the goal of helping participants regain strength, confidence, and independence. David quickly became a regular attendee, embracing the challenge and finding both physical and emotional benefits in the structured exercise programme.

Guided by RUCT instructor Mike Dyson, David learned how to safely use weights and ropes to rebuild upper body strength, tackled the treadmill and exercise bike to improve stamina and leg muscles, and practised balance-focused exercises like stair climbing and transitioning from sitting and kneeling positions—everyday tasks that had become difficult post-surgery.

“The instructor’s advice, patience and encouragement have meant so much to me,” said David. “Mike’s willingness to demonstrate the exercises properly and make sure I don’t harm myself has been extremely helpful.”

The progress David has made has transformed not only his fitness but his daily life. Tasks like climbing stairs, walking, gardening, and even housework are no longer sources of anxiety—they’re part of a routine he now approaches with strength and confidence.

Living alone, David values the independence that has returned as a result of the sessions. He has even begun practising the exercises at home to maintain and build on his progress.

“I’ve found the experience hard work, but very beneficial, and I’ve enjoyed it thoroughly,” he said. “I would like to think I can continue to attend the sessions at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. Thank you.”

David’s story is a testament to the power of tailored, community-focused rehabilitation programmes like those offered by RUCT. By creating a supportive and accessible environment, the Living with and Beyond Cancer Fitness Sessions are helping individuals not only recover, but thrive.
