On Saturday 17th May, 23 brave individuals gave up the comfort of their beds and took to the stands at the AESSEAL New York Stadium for a night they won’t forget — and one that thousands in our community can’t escape.

The Sleep Out, delivered in partnership by Rotherham United Community Trust (RUCT) and Shiloh Rotherham, offered just a glimpse into the challenges faced by people who are sleeping rough every night. Participants wrapped up in sleeping bags and layered clothing, bedded down on cold concrete, and tried to find rest in conditions no one should have to call ‘normal’.

As temperatures dropped and the wind whipped around the stadium, one message rang loud and clear — this was just one night, in a safe and secure place. For many, there is no safety. There is no end in sight.

“I can’t lie. That was one of the worst night’s sleep I’ve ever had — and we were safely locked in a secure football stadium,”
said Jonathan Allan, Community Programme Manager at RUCT.

Jonathan’s reflection became all the more poignant when speaking to two men who are Shiloh service users, who also took part in the sleepout. When asked if he’d managed to get any rest, one simply replied:

“Yeah mate, I’m used to it, aren’t I?”

The words hit hard.
Why on earth should anyone have to get used to it?

The aim of the event was simple — to raise awareness and support for those experiencing homelessness in Rotherham. Every person who took part not only gained a new perspective, but also raised funds that will go directly towards services that provide practical help, emotional support, and long-term solutions.

  • Shiloh Rotherham works tirelessly to offer guidance, training, hot meals, and a path toward stability for people who are homeless or at risk.
  • RUCT continues to use the power of football to reach people of all ages and backgrounds — including some of the most vulnerable in our community.

Thank You

To the 23 participants — your discomfort brought light to someone else’s darkness.
To our partners at Shiloh Rotherham — your commitment changes lives every day.
To everyone who donated — your kindness matters more than you know.

The Sleep Out was one night for us. For too many, it’s every night.
Let’s keep working until no one has to get used to it.
