Maya, a passionate young football enthusiast, first joined the Premier League Lunchtime Club at her school because of her love for football. While she had played football before, her involvement became more consistent and rewarding after joining the lunchtime sessions run by Rotherham United Community Trust (RUCT), and lead by coach Drew Russell.

What drew Maya to football was the teamwork and camaraderie the game relies on. However, she had not previously played football during breaktimes or lunchtimes at school. The Premier League Lunchtime Club offered her an exciting new opportunity to play the sport she loves in a supportive environment.

Maya particularly appreciated that the lunchtime club was a girls-only football space, which allowed her to play comfortably with her peers. She shared that she hadn’t always enjoyed playing with boys and valued the chance to connect with other girls in her school who shared her passion for football.

The lunchtime club’s inclusive and skill-focused approach had a transformative impact on Maya. She credited the Rotherham United coaches, like Drew, for teaching her valuable football skills, which gave her the confidence to take her game to the next level. Encouraged by her progress, Maya decided to join a local grassroots team. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “I decided to join one because I feel more confident since being able to play with girls at school and with the skills the Drew has taught me.”

Since joining the grassroots team, Maya has become a star player, scoring “too many goals” to count and providing numerous assists. She is also proudly building her collection of medals and trophies, a testament to her hard work and dedication.

Through her involvement with RUCT, Maya has had opportunities that she describes as unforgettable. She has been invited to play on the pitch at the AESSEAL New York Stadium not once, but twice. While she initially felt nervous about performing in front of thousands of spectators, Maya said she had an amazing time and is excited to do it again.

Another highlight was participating in the Utilita Girls Cup at Sheffield Hallam Sports Park, where Maya’s school team competed. She scored two goals during the tournament and loved the experience, particularly spending a day with girls who share her enthusiasm for football. Maya shared, “I loved that day because I got to miss school, and I loved having a day where all girls could play football together.”

Maya’s journey through the Premier League Lunchtime Club has been transformative. She has gained confidence, developed her skills, and made many new friends both at school and within her grassroots team. She’s looking forward to continuing her participation in the lunchtime club and dreams of playing on a larger grass pitch with proper football boots, saying it feels “more like the real thing.”

Maya’s story highlights the significant impact that RUCT’s school-based football initiatives can have on young people. By creating a safe and inclusive environment, the Premier League Lunchtime Club has not only fostered Maya’s love for football but has also helped her build confidence, forge friendships, and pursue her dreams both on and off the pitch.
