At 54 years old, Zahira Khan has a story that inspires and uplifts. Moving to the UK from Pakistan in 2009, Zahira found herself at home, battling depression and struggling with her health. But a friendly encounter and a love for badminton changed everything.
Zahira had been a teacher for 18 years in Pakistan, where she also excelled as a badminton player and coach. However, when she arrived in the UK, life felt vastly different. “I didn’t know anyone here, and my English wasn’t great, so I stayed indoors all the time,” Zahira recalls. Over time, she gained weight, developed arthritis, and lost her confidence.
Her doctor encouraged her to get active to improve her physical and mental health, but leaving the house felt like an insurmountable challenge.
In 2022, Zahira met Nazia, who told her about the badminton sessions at Rotherham Leisure Centre. Nervous but intrigued, Zahira decided to attend. Initially, she only planned to watch, but with Nazia’s encouragement and the warm welcome from other participants, Zahira soon picked up a racket again.
“I told Nazia I couldn’t play like I used to, but she kept encouraging me to try. The ladies were so friendly and supportive. It didn’t take long before I started joining in—and loving it!”
Now, Zahira attends badminton sessions three times a week and even participates in double sessions on Thursdays. The impact on her life has been profound:
- Weight Loss: Zahira has lost 2.5 stones (15kg), transforming her health and boosting her self-esteem.
- Active Lifestyle: In addition to badminton, Zahira has joined a gym and attends swimming sessions in the evenings.
- Increased Confidence: Once afraid to leave home after 6 pm, Zahira now embraces life with energy and enthusiasm.
- Community Connection: The friendships she has built through the sessions have provided her with a strong support network.
“Badminton has completely changed my life,” Zahira shares. “I look forward to the sessions every week, and they’ve given me my confidence back. I feel fitter, healthier, and so much happier.”
Zahira now encourages other women, especially those who feel isolated or inactive, to take the leap and join. “I tell my friends who stay indoors to come along. The sessions are so enjoyable and welcoming—they’ve made such a difference in my life.
Zahira credits Nazia and the badminton group for transforming her outlook. “I’m so grateful for the support and encouragement I’ve received. To be able to enjoy my favourite sport again, at my age, is incredible. It’s given me a new lease on life.”
Zahira’s story is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of sport. It highlights how community initiatives like these can break down barriers, improve well-being, and build connections that change lives.
