This festive season, the Rotherham United Community Trust (RUCT) team decided to spread Christmas cheer in a meaningful way by donating to the Families First Toy Appeal instead of participating in their traditional Secret Santa exchange.
The initiative, in collaboration with the Rotherham United first team, highlights the club’s commitment to supporting the local community. First-team players Sam Nombe and Ben Hatton joined the RUCT staff today at the Families First hub (based at Parkgate Shopping Centre) to pick and pack presents, ensuring that children across Rotherham have a gift to open on Christmas Day.
Sam and Ben’s involvement brought an extra touch of excitement to the event, showcasing the players’ dedication to making a positive impact off the pitch. Together with the RUCT team, they helped select thoughtful gifts that will bring smiles to children from families facing challenging circumstances.
“Christmas is a time for giving, and being part of this initiative means so much to us,” said Jonathan Allan, Community Programme Manager. “Knowing we’re helping to make a difference for families in our community makes it even more special.”
The Families First Toy Appeal is a vital campaign that supports local families during the festive season, ensuring that no child is left without a gift to unwrap. The RUCT team’s participation reflects their ethos of giving back to the community they serve.
Ann Levick has been doing volunteer work like this for the Rotherham community for over 30 years, and now volunteers for Families First full-time after leaving her previous role. “It’s amazing to see the people of Rotherham come together to help others in our town. The town is amazing when it comes to things like this, we couldn’t do it without them”.
“Just this year the Families First Toy Appeal has helped over 2000 people in Rotherham, from 0 to 18 years old, ensuring that they all wake up with a present on Christmas Day.” Ann told us.
By swapping Secret Santa for this charitable cause, RUCT and Rotherham United continue to demonstrate the power of football to bring people together and make a huge difference in people’s lives.
The Trust extends a heartfelt thank you to Families First for the incredible work they do and encourages everyone who can to support their ongoing efforts to spread joy in the community.
Happy holidays from everyone at RUCT and Rotherham United!
