As part of the EFL Week of Action, our Inclusion department at Rotherham United Community Trust proudly hosted a Women’s Recreational Football Tournament at the Indoor Football Centre over the weekend. Led by Megan Wylde, our Youth & Inclusion Coordinator, the event aimed to bring together recreational football teams from across the town and beyond for a day of fun, fitness, and friendship.
Megan, who is involved in the world of Ladies Football, was inspired to organise the tournament after receiving a message from one of the team managers. “She mentioned her team’s disappointment at not having any tournaments scheduled until the summer,” Megan explained. “I know how much the ladies love the game and how important it is to their sense of community. I felt this was something we could step in and help with.”
Using the resources available through the Community Trust, Megan took the initiative to set up the indoor 5-a-side tournament, inviting teams from near and far. The response was fantastic, with enthusiastic teams eager to take part. Thanks to the collaboration with Memo Fitness CIC and the support of our dedicated team, the tournament ran smoothly and safely, creating a memorable experience for everyone involved.
“The recreational community is such a great atmosphere,” Megan said. “The girls absolutely love the game, and it was a pleasure to host and see them enjoying the day. There’s something so special about bringing people together through football.”
The tournament exemplified the spirit of the EFL Week of Action, showcasing how football can create inclusive spaces and foster a sense of belonging. The day was not just about the matches but about celebrating the camaraderie and joy that recreational football brings to the players.
Looking ahead, Megan and the Rotherham United Community Trust are already planning future events. “Hopefully in the new year, we can invite the teams back for another tournament,” Megan added. “And maybe, just maybe, we can get some of the ladies playing on the NYS pitches!”
At Rotherham United Community Trust, we believe in the power of football to inspire and connect people, and we are proud to champion opportunities for all to enjoy the beautiful game. Stay tuned for more exciting events and initiatives!
