On Wednesday, at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, students at RUSC gathered for their annual Awards Evening. All students and their families are invited to celebrate their academic year achievements and sporting achievements. College staff and tutors were also presenting various awards throughout the evening, alongside three special guests.

The evening kicked off with Dion Lefley and Education Manager, James Mahoney, welcoming all guests and going through some of the achievements made by students during the last academic year. Dion then invited our first special guest, Howard Webb, onto the stage to say a few words.

Howard Webb addressed the room by introducing himself and his background. Expressing that being a “local lad” himself, who aspired to be a footballer ended up taking a different career path but still within the sporting industry which he loved. He touched on his successes and encouraged the students that anything is possible if they put their mind to their future and dreams.

James then led onto one of the most anticipated moments of the evening, the ‘Goal of the Season’ Award – where 6 students were nominated for their unbelievable goals for the Shadow Academy, which were all worthy of a place in the hall of fame. Who would you have voted for?

Dion then welcomed up to the stage Jamie Yates, our Shadow Academy Manager and Football Development Officer, alongside former Miller and current Sheffield F.C. Manager, Ryan Cresswell, to introduce the football awards. Staff and coaches from Rotherham United Sports College came up to the stage to present awards to their chosen winners.

To round off the first half of the evening students and parents were invited to write some questions to special guests Howard Webb and Ryan Cresswell. Dion hosted the Q&A, with both Howard and Ryan letting us in on some of their best and memorable experiences in their career. Everyone was then invited to indulge in pie and peas, use the photobooth and use other photo opportunities.

After a comfort break, James was back into the swing of things introducing our third special guest Ken Merry who would be assisting in presenting the Academic Awards in the evening. It was an incredibly special moment to invite Ken to the evening, as Ken is heavily involved in Rotherham United Community Trust as our Education Trustee.
