The Rotherham United Community Trust’s Employability Department is celebrating the success of Hannah Berry, a determined young woman who, with their support, has overcome significant challenges to secure part-time employment.

Hannah, who has been unemployed since leaving college in 2021, faced several obstacles in her journey towards employment. Despite achieving numerous qualifications, including maths and English, Hannah struggled with low confidence and communication issues due to her autism diagnosis. Her initial attempts to transition into the workforce were met with difficulties, as she partially completed a traineeship and continued to volunteer at Homeward Hound Dog Rescue.

Recognising Hannah’s potential, the Rotherham United Community Trust provided a comprehensive support plan to enable Hannah to enhance her skillset and continue removing barriers. Hannah was very proactive and engaged with all opportunities she was presented with including:

  • Confidence Building Group: Hannah participated in the Confidence Building Group, engaging in activities designed to improve her self-esteem and social skills. This included the “Eat Well for Less” sessions and practical exercises in planning travel, which enabled her to confidently navigate to a provider in Doncaster.
  • Visit to a local training provider, Aspire 2 Be Training: To further enhance her confidence and prepare her for the job market, Hannah attended a day’s training at Aspire 2 Be in Doncaster. This hands-on experience was pivotal in helping her understand workplace expectations and develop practical skills.
  • Mock Interviews and CV Workshops: The employability team at RUCT conducted multiple mock interviews and CV workshops to prepare Hannah for job applications. These sessions significantly boosted her interviewing skills and gave her the confidence to independently complete the interview at Westfield House and ultimately secure employment.
  • Team Building Activities: Engaging in team building activities helped Hannah improve her communication and collaborative skills within a group setting.
  • Job Preparation: The team provided extensive support to help Hannah prepare for her job interview at Westfield House. This included accompanying her to the company, assisting with her DBS check, and offering continuous encouragement.
  • Ongoing Support: Post-employment, the Trust ensured that Hannah had the necessary ID for her new job and provided guidance on understanding her first wage slip.

The impact of these interventions has been profound. Hannah’s confidence has soared, enabling her to communicate effectively with familiar people and step out of her comfort zone into new social and professional scenarios. She has also developed essential employability skills, making her a strong candidate in the job market.

Her dedication and the support from Rotherham United Community Trust culminated in Hannah securing a part-time position as a housekeeper. This achievement marks a significant milestone in her career journey.

Hannah’s journey with the RUCT does not end here. The team will continue to support her as she transitions into her new role, providing advice and assistance as needed. They will also ensure that she understands her wage slip and other employment-related documents, reinforcing her independence and confidence in her new job.

Hannah’s story is a testament to the positive impact that tailored support and dedicated community initiatives can have on individuals facing employment challenges. Rotherham United Community Trust remains committed to empowering more individuals like Hannah to achieve their employment goals and thrive in their careers.
