On Friday 17th May our Inclusion and Active Through Football team collaborated to host the inaugural Nicky Markham Memorial Cup at the New York Stadium.

Nicky, a lifelong Miller and long lasting community trust participant recently passed away. The cup, hosted in Nicky’s name saw friends, family and team mates take to the New York Stadium pitch with a aim of raising awareness and funds, all the money raised will be donated to a chosen charity by Nicky’s family.

Anthony Bayou – RUCT Youth and Inclusion Manager said;

“I’ve known Nicky for as long as I have been here at the football club which is 8 years. Nicky always had a smile on his face, he was bubbly around colleagues and team mates and loved football. His enthusiasm to pull people together through the love of the game was always a pleasure to witness. The recent charity game encapsulated what Nicky was about which was bringing people together and having the best time possible. I was deeply saddened to hear the news about Nicky’s passing and I would like to send my condolences to his family and friends.“

Once a Miller, Always a Miller.

The event was more than just a football match; it was a celebration of Nicky’s spirit and his passion in uniting people through sport. Attendees reflected on his life and contributions, underscoring the community’s deep respect and affection for him.

The Rotherham United Community Trust’s ‘United 4 Communities’ football team played a key role in organising and participating in the event, reinforcing their commitment to creating new community ties and supporting inclusive activities.

As the community continues to honor Nicky’s memory, the inaugural Nicky Markham Memorial Cup stands as a testament to his enduring legacy.
