As the 2023/24 football season comes to an end Anthony Bayou, RUCT’s Inclusion Manager, met with Rotherham United F.C. first team player and former captain Ollie Rathbone to discuss what it means to be an ally. In the world of football, camaraderie and teamwork are fundamental to success on the pitch. But beyond scoring goals and winning matches, there’s a crucial aspect that often goes overlooked: the role of an ally in combating discrimination and supporting teammates.

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need for inclusivity and diversity within football. Players from various backgrounds, cultures, and identities come together to compete in the sport they love. However, discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic still persists in some corners of the footballing world.
