Rotherham United Community Trust hosted their first ever Premier League Primary Stars Maths & English Stadium Day on Tuesday 5th March 2024.

Over 250 pupils from Rotherham Primary Schools took part in 9 innovative workshops utilising all spaces around the stadium to test and develop Maths and English skills. This included manager mode maths activities in the first team and away team changing rooms, conducting interviews in the press room, football darts pitch side, budgeting in the club shop and a ‘library zone’ where every single child took home a free book and matchday programme to read at their own leisure to support education beyond the school gates.

First team players Tom Eaves & Sean Morrison also recorded a fun World Book Day video including an insight to what the first players liked to read growing up, the importance of reading, why it’s important a footballer has competent reading skills & finished with a quiz which all young people took part in along with the players.

The aim of the event was to embed the Premier League Primary Stars value ‘be inspired’ giving local young people unique access to the life of a first team footballer to engage young people in core curriculum subjects. We hope the event has inspired young people to pick up a book and expand their vocabulary as well as recognise the importance of maths skills in daily life & careers.

One of the teachers who attended, told us “I was truly impressed by the impact of the Rotherham United Community Trust’s Primary Stars Maths and English Stadium Day. The enthusiasm and engagement from the students was brilliant, as they immersed themselves in learning within the stadium environment. Days like this are key for our pupils, it’s about creating memorable experiences that spark a love for learning. The connection between football and education proved to be a winning formula, inspiring these young minds in ways I hadn’t seen before.”

Pupils from Redscope Primary School, said “It has been the first time that I have come to the Rotherham stadium, and the activities we have been doing here are so fun. It’s a cool place to learn!”

Another pupil said “Getting to see the changing rooms was so cool, and I have learnt a lot about why Maths and English is so important to footballers too.”

Jonny Gilberthorpe, Participation Manager at RUCT said “We are in a privileged position to be able to support primary schools across the borough to educate and inspire young people with the power of the Rotherham United badge.”

“Through our Premier League Primary Stars Maths and English Stadium Day, we’re not just teaching Maths and English; we’re instilling confidence, teamwork, and ambition in our young learners. It’s about transforming learning outside the classroom into a vibrant arena of discovery, where every child can see themselves scoring goals both on and off the pitch.”

Rotherham United Community Trust works with primary schools throughout the academic year offering intervention work to educate, engage and inspire primary pupils in maths & English. We have the ambition to work with every single primary school in Rotherham, if any schools are planning ahead for next year and want to be involved in events like the above please contact jgilberthorpe@rotherhamunited.net.
