Rotherham United Community Trust launched their employability provision in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in 2020. From mock interviews to confidence building courses, RUCT offer a range of opportunities to help participants gain new skills. Over the few years this has been running from the New York Stadium, it has been great to see the progression that participants have made and where they are now, including Mitchell.

Mitchell was unemployed for about 13 months before coming to visit the employability team at RUCT. He was supported by the Youth Hub programme, as well as the ‘Feel Well Work Well’ scheme all with the aim of building self-esteem and confidence.

To help Mitchell in his journey he was also referred to the mental health organisation MIND as part of his ‘Feel Well Work Well’ scheme, this scheme is targeted towards unemployed young people with mental health issues who may be from a disadvantaged background. Mitchell learnt about CV and cover letter writing, job search support, offered impartial information, as well as advice and guidance to enable him to make an informed choice about the right path for him.

We spoke to Mitchell about his experience with Rotherham United Community Trust, and he said “I began my journey at Rotherham Community Trust as a very timid, introverted individual. I had gone through a very difficult period within my life and have received the upmost support from Sarah. I was offered counselling for my mental health problems and given the utilities needed to increase my confidence in finding the career I wanted to pursue.

The regular meetings and constant reassurance/character building has really helped get me back onto the straight and narrow. I will be starting an Access to University course in September 2023, studying humanities, social studies and social science.”
