The picture above shows a mountain of clothes washed up on Ghana beach. Here at Rotherham United Community Trust we want to try and do something positive to address this. We have been working closely with Georgie Kelly ready for launching our kit recycling scheme at today’s home game against Preston North End.

More than one hundred million items of used clothing drop from circulation and go to waste each year in Ghana’s capital alone but the problem isn’t restricted to Ghana, where the trust will visit next month on a humanitarian mission, or Africa alone, here at home we are adding ever more items to this “fast fashion” culture every year.

What happens to the previous season’s designs once the latest releases are launched in the summer? How do families afford to keep up with the demand?

Supporters are invited reduce their home kit mountains and deposit replica kits, training kits and football boots into our collection bins at the Fan Zone. We will then be opening a Swap Shop in the Goal Zone. The swap shop will open once per month on a date and time to be confirmed.

Do you need the next size up but can’t justify the expense? No problem, bring in your item from a previous season, pick up another item in the size you need and off you go, still sporting The Millers colours and doing your bit for the environment as well! Nothing to swap but the kids are in desperate need of a new kit or pair of boots? No problem, we know finances are tight right now, help yourself, all we ask that when you need the next size up bring the item back in good condition so someone else can love it too!

With the launch of our environmental sustainability strategy, Rotherham United Community Trust are looking for local partners to help us to go green and help our supporters to join the green movement. If you can help us; please get in touch:
