Celebrating 10 years of Stonewalls Rainbow Laces Campaign

For many years Rotherham United F.C. and Rotherham United Community Trust have been supporting Stonewalls Rainbow Laces campaign, which focuses on supporting LGBTQ+ communities within sport. 7 in 10 football fans who’ve attended a match have heard or witnessed homophobia at matches, and 66% of lesbian, gay, bi and trans people felt that there were problems with homophobia and transphobia in sport and that this acted as a barrier to LGBT people taking part.

This year the Rainbow Laces Season runs from the 19th to the 31st of October, with Rainbow Laces Day being tomorrow, the 26th of October 2023.

Rotherham United Community Trust launched an LGBTQ+ support group in 2021 called ‘Proud Millers’. The aim of the ‘Proud Millers’ group is to ensure our club becomes a more accessible and inclusive organisation for all our members and community.

‘Proud Millers’ will be a safe space where fans, participants and allies can discuss how Rotherham United (and football as a whole) can become more inclusive to those from LGBTQ+ communities. Whether this is through regular inclusive sports sessions or community education campaigns, we at RUCST aim to facilitate this.

Recently, ‘Proud Millers’ has joined a regional alliance along with Rainbow Blades, Marching Out Together, Rainbow Owls, Rainbow Spireites, Proud Forest and Proud Stags to form an alliance that can help make football a safe and enjoyable space for everyone.

We are currently looking for a volunteer to take the lead on our ‘Proud Millers’ fan group with support from Rotherham United Community Trust, this could include leading meet up’s, be our spokesperson for the Regional LGBTQ+ Football Supporters Group Alliance or supporting the Club and Trust with campaigns like Rainbow Laces, and many more exciting opportunities.

If you are interested in this volunteer role or would like more information please call us on 01709 827767, or email inclusion@rotherhamunited.net.

At today’s match against Coventry City, we have partnered up with some local organisations to help raise awareness of the support for the LGBTQ+ community within Rotherham. You will have seen representatives from the Rainbow Project and Rainbow Pride, as well as MESMAC Yorkshire out the front of the stadium pre-match. We would like to give a massive thank you to these organisations for coming out today, supporting the Rainbow Laces campaign and for their involvement with our very own ‘Proud Millers’ fan group.
